SAN MARCOS — It’s rare when city officials heed the advice of the skateboarders who carve the streets and parking lots in their town But when it came time for San Marcos to build a community skatepark, that’s exactly what happened. “There has been a long-term interest among the youth, and quite a few of our community service commissioners and City Council members are supportive of the idea of having a place for kids to go (to skate),” said Craig Sargent-Beach, assistant director of the community services department for the city. He said the city has rules restricting skateboarding in public places. Since there currently is no skatepark in the city, skateboarders either go to skateparks in other cities or buck authority and skate where it is prohibited, risking a $190 fine and the confiscation of their skateboard by sheriff’s deputies. “It seemed appropriate to have an area where we could tell them to go where they are allowed to skateboard and not be a disturbance,” Sargent-Beach said. but there is a difference in having a place where officials could tell skateboarders to go and creating a place where they would want to go. “When we saw what the city had originally designed, we said ‘Please don’t do this to the city,’” said Andy Schmidt, owner of Schmidt’s Boardhouse, a surf and skate store near Cal State San Marcos. Schmidt’s shop sponsors a skateboard team and he offered his input regarding the skatepark’s design. Schmidt said if a skatepark is poorly designed, skaters won’t use it. That in turn puts them back on the streets to skate. “It sets it up for failure, it sets the deputies up for failure, it sets the city government up for failure, it sets the kids up for failure,” Schmidt said. The park’s design is based on the concept of Dylan Gearheart, a San Marcos High School graduate who designed the park’s layout in a drafting class. Seventeen-year-old Gearheart talked with his friends to make sure the park had all the features that would attract real-world skateboarders. “I looked at all my favorite things that I like about every park and condensed it to a smaller area,” Gearheart said. Gearheart and Schmidt estimate about 80 percent of Gearheart’s design made it through to the final design. “The design of this park is everything is linked together, so it is a flowing individual thing,” Schmidt said. The design includes stairs, rails, a half bowl and quarter pipes. It was approved by the city’s Youth Commission through which fellow skateboarder Jordan Handel worked to make the park a reality. “We had to push the limits on what they would allow,” 16-year-old Handel said. “(At first) they didn’t allow us to put in any stairs or rails or anything like that.” Handel signed up for the detail on the Youth Commission because he knew his input would help create a fun and usable facility. “We talked to them a little bit and said, ‘This is what we need and that’s why they skate at the schools because of the stairs,’” Handel said. Those in the San Marcos skateboard community are looking forward to the skatepark even if it is a year away. “I’m really, really stoked about it,” Anthony Nuckols said. The 21-year-old skates on the Urban Skate Shop skateboard team.“I’ve been waiting for a skatepark here forever,” Gearheart said. “I’m really stoked on it. Everything in there are things I like. Tags: San Marcos skateparkAm I getting so desperate that I need to post bail photos? Not at all. I just wanted to show you what I tried to shoot last weekend. Don’t you think it’s crazy how magazine’s will run stuff that was never made? What? You didn’t know that? It’s true…. “He came so close” or “He’ll go back and pull it” are some of the sweet excuses I have heard. Sorry, but I’m not buying the excuses…Or how about putting together fake sequences? People do desperate things at desperate times I guess. Here’s Nolan Helmstetter with this month’s Poser of the month. Oh he’ll go back and get it…… Tags: desperate measures, Nolan Helmstetter, poser of the month
This is the first installment of a weekly sequence photo that will be uploaded every Sunday. This is the pool down the street from my house that I cant even really skate these days since the neighbor is a douche bag. With that being said here’s Kyle Galahger getting served up in the Blue Tile Dolphin pool at one of the last hassle free sessions. Those super citizens always have to make their presence known…. Tags: Kyle Galahger, sunday sequenceOh sweet Jesus it’s raining! Oh my god the kid’s asleep! Perfect time for an update. Here’s some random photo’s for your viewing pleasure.
So what is your problem? What’s wrong with you? There’s got to be something wrong with you if don’t think this is as good as it gets. Or maybe there’s something wrong with me? I doubt that. Well regardless, here’s more from the Barrier Kult. Tags: Deer man of dark woods, video |
